Drywall Finishing & Repairs: What to Expect

Nail holes, dents, water stains, cracked seams — drywall damage comes in a lot of forms, and the fix isn't always as simple as a dab of spackle. Here's what actually goes into a repair that disappears completely once it's painted.

Common Types of Drywall Damage

Most repairs fall into a few categories: small nail and screw holes, dents and dings from furniture or moving day, cracked seams where two sheets meet, and larger holes from accidents or old fixtures. Water stains are their own category — those usually mean there's a moisture source to track down before any patch goes on, or the stain will just bleed through again.

Why Texture Matching Makes or Breaks a Repair

Smooth walls are easy. But most homes have some level of texture — orange peel, knockdown, or a hand-troweled finish — and a patch that isn't textured to match will show up as a flat, glaring spot the moment light hits it at an angle, even under fresh paint. Matching texture is often the difference between a repair nobody notices and one that's obvious from across the room.

The Repair Process, Step by Step

A proper repair starts with assessing the damage — is it cosmetic, or is there a cause (leak, structural movement) that needs addressing first? From there: cut out and replace badly damaged sections, tape the seams, apply joint compound in thin coats, sand smooth, then match the surrounding texture before priming.

Do You Need to Repaint the Whole Wall?

Not always — small patches can often be spot-primed and touched up if the paint is a close match. But paint can fade unevenly over time, so for larger repairs or older paint jobs, repainting the full wall (or the full room) usually gives a more uniform, professional result.

When to Call a Pro vs. DIY

Small nail holes and minor dents are reasonable DIY territory. But textured walls, larger holes, ceiling repairs, or anything tied to a water source are where professional texture-matching and prep really pay off — a bad patch is often more expensive to fix later than it would have been to do right the first time.
